What is Havening?

Havening Techniques are a psychosensory therapy developed by Dr Ronald Ruden. They use specific touch, called Havening Touch, to change the way the brain processes traumatic or stressful memories. The gentle touch generates delta waves in the brain, which permanently remove the emotional charge from distressing experiences.

Unlike talk therapy, Havening works directly with the neuroscience of how trauma is encoded in the brain. It doesn't require you to relive painful memories in detail. Instead, it targets the amygdala — the brain's threat detection centre — and depotentiates the receptors that keep traumatic memories emotionally active.

The result is that you can still remember an event, but it no longer triggers a stress response. The emotional charge is gone.

How Havening Works

1

Activate

The distressing memory or emotion is briefly brought to awareness, activating the neural pathway where the trauma is stored.

2

Havening Touch

Gentle, soothing touch is applied to the arms, palms and face. This produces delta waves that begin to alter the brain's encoding of the memory.

3

Depotentiation

The emotional receptors linked to the memory are permanently removed. The memory remains, but its power to cause distress is gone.
